FACT VERSUS FICTION
By Scott Dodson
Much has been said this election season regarding developers, who has ties to developers, who is a developer, what people’s pasts have crossed paths with developers, who has taken funding from developers, who has much to gain by development and what that might mean for the roles that candidates seek?
To that end, I can objectively and emphatically state for the record that:
- I am not a developer
- I have not invested in any development projects during my life
- I have not taken any campaign contributions from developers
- I will not take any campaign contributions from developers
- I am not backed by developers
- The only property I own is my home in Heath, TX which I love
- I have nothing to gain from any developments planned or in process
- My campaign is largely personally funded and fully disclosable
The question to ask yourself if claims are made is 1) Is what they are saying true? Have you seen any evidence or supporting materials? 2) Is there logic behind the connection that makes sense that lends it credibility? 3) Does either party have something to gain from the connection or trying to influence a direction? 4) Does the party sharing the information have something to gain? 5) Do you believe that special interests can impact a candidates decision making? and 6) Does the type of development tie or associations pose a conflict of interest to the position?
In Heath we are blessed with quality neighbors, many of which may be custom home builders, plumbers, electricians, or own construction and landscaping companies. While they may benefit from some growth, Heath’s 125 -150 new homes a year won’t tip the scale for their business unless a major change was made to our ordinances, comprehensive plan, or a special use permit was approved. Our city council has put in place protections to stop further tract development and restrict dense development. Look closely at the type of connection to development when the word developer is used or someone is accused of being a developer or developer backed.
We are all in agreement that tract development and high density are not wanted in Heath. Ask questions, do some work to find the answers and question the motivations of those making the accusations. Trust, but verify.
In today’s digital world everyone knows the ramifications of ‘race-baiting’ for political gain. In our local political environment, there are those that have subscribed to ‘developer-baiting’. Do your homework citizens, ask for proof and don’t give into the small mindedness of those that seek to distract you, especially if it is untrue.
I’m Scott Dodson and I am running for Heath City Council – Place 5. No BS, just solid leadership, open communication and strong representation.
